Causeway Bay Upgrades Pedestrian Links With New Footbridges and Waterfront Access

Causeway Bay is advancing infrastructure projects that prioritise pedestrian movement and integration with existing transport.

These initiatives address congestion on key streets while improving access across the commercial area, a focus shared by many dense urban centres worldwide seeking to balance growth with walkability.

Pedestrian Link Project Details

A proposed pedestrian link project includes five footbridges and a roughly 100-metre covered walkway starting from Hysan Place to connect Lee Gardens One-Six and Caroline Hill Road. Openings are scheduled progressively from 2026. The footbridges will divert pedestrians from busy at-grade roads including Yun Ping Road, Hysan Avenue, Pennington Street and Leighton Road while providing barrier-free access from MTR Causeway Bay Station to the hinterland.

Related Developments and Access Improvements

Lee Garden Eight, a joint development by Hysan and Chinachem, will feature an all-weather integrated pedestrian walkway system linking Causeway Bay MTR station through Lee Gardens Eight. Widened Caroline Hill Road and Leighton Road are expected to improve traffic efficiency by up to 25 per cent. One Causeway Bay, developed by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group and Hongkong Land, has completed topping out in July 2024 and will deliver 500,000 sq. ft. of Grade A office space and 55,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The revitalised Typhoon Shelter Precinct in Causeway Bay covers 2.53 ha and includes a new 317-metre promenade near Victoria Park Road and new harbour steps to bring people closer to the water.

These measures reflect Causeway Bay's approach to layering pedestrian infrastructure onto commercial and waterfront zones, consistent with strategies used in other high-density cities to ease street-level pressure. Further openings and adjustments will occur as construction advances.
