Sha Tin Launches Three Infrastructure Projects Targeting Traffic, Water, Floods

Trunk Road T4, a 2.3km dual two-lane road linking Shing Mun Tunnel Road to Sha Tin Road, has been under construction since August 26, 2024, with completion expected in 2030.

Traffic Relief on Key Routes

The widening of Tai Po Road (Sha Tin Section) between Sha Tin Plaza and Man Wo House finished at the end of 2024. This $1.6 billion project was carried out to alleviate traffic congestion along the corridor used daily by Sha Tin residents. With the new lanes now open, drivers experience shorter peak-hour delays on this section of Tai Po Road. The completed works connect directly to the ongoing Trunk Road T4, which will add another route option once finished.

Water Supply Expansion

The In-situ Reprovisioning of Sha Tin Water Treatment Works (South Works) continues to increase daily capacity from 364,000 to 550,000 cubic metres. Completion remains scheduled for 2027. Local households and businesses in Sha Tin rely on this facility, so the upgrade supports consistent supply as demand grows in the district.

Flood Protection Measures

Drainage improvement works include an 8,600 cubic metre underground stormwater storage tank at Sha Tin Park together with 1.8km of flood walls along Shing Mun River. These measures are now proceeding to manage heavy rainfall events that have previously affected low-lying areas near the river.

New Sports Facilities

Whitehead Sports Park construction began in September 2023 and is expected to reach substantial completion in the third quarter of 2026. Once open, the park will provide additional recreational space for Sha Tin residents and organised sports groups.
