Magnetic Capital acquires Stanley Marketplace for $41 million
Magnetic Capital acquisition prompts questions over future scale of the site and impacts on surrounding businesses in Stanley.
How we reported this
The Stanley Marketplace has been sold to Magnetic Capital for A$41 million, according to a financing memo prepared by JLL and obtained by Axios.
The transaction marks a shift for one of Stanley's established community hubs, where the original owners had maintained a focus on local character since the site's opening in 2016. Residents and nearby business owners now face uncertainty over how the new ownership will balance expansion with existing uses, especially as Magnetic Capital outlines larger-scale plans in the memo.
Development opportunities outlined in the memo
The 60-page financing document points to potential replacement of the south parking lot with around 300 apartment units and 10,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. It also flags a possible 150-room hotel nearby along with expanded outdoor programming. These elements would increase the site's footprint beyond the current marketplace layout.
Analysts note that such additions typically require city approvals before construction begins. Magnetic Capital has not yet submitted formal plans, leaving open the question of timing and design details that could affect traffic flow and open space in Stanley.
Questions ahead for neighbours and the council
Local business owners have expressed concern that new ownership may alter the marketplace's established community focus. Issues raised include parking availability, the scale of outdoor events and whether the site's cohesive character will remain intact. Some residents also flag the risk of accelerated displacement as development proceeds.
At-large council member Alli Jackson has stated that Magnetic Capital will eventually approach the city with development proposals. She emphasised the need for consultation so that outcomes make sense for the surrounding community. Most neighbours interviewed by Axios described the marketplace as a positive presence so far, while stressing the importance of preserving that role during any expansion.
Key decisions now rest with Magnetic Capital on whether to proceed with the apartment, retail and hotel elements, and with the city on how those plans align with Stanley's existing neighbourhood fabric. Neighbours expect further updates once the buyer engages formally with council processes.
