Central Adds Indoor Turf, Pools, Courts for Sports Programs
Recent openings and ongoing builds add indoor turf, pools and multiuse courts that support local leagues and school programs.

Greater Williamsburg’s new Multiuse Sports Center opened on June 24, 2026, with the country’s largest retractable indoor turf measuring 114,141 square feet. The facility supplies a year-round surface for multiple sports in one location.
The timing aligns with rising use of indoor venues by community leagues that need consistent practice space regardless of weather. Central-area organizations already run programs that depend on such infrastructure for regular schedules.
Central-area projects add capacity
Central Saanich secured a $2 million federal grant toward its $4.9 million Centennial Multi-Sport Box at Centennial Park, a year-round replacement for a 40-year-old lacrosse box. Construction is advancing after an original 2025 target. In Central Bedfordshire, work continues on the £30 million leisure and community hub in Leighton Buzzard that will include an eight-lane swimming pool and 150-station gym when it opens in summer 2026. Owensboro’s downtown indoor sports complex, budgeted at $18 million, remains on track for a July 2026 finish. Peterborough opened new basketball and multi-sport courts at Central Park in early May 2026 after converting two former tennis courts.
These builds sit alongside smaller-scale work such as Davenport Central’s indoor sports facility, which includes locker rooms, a weight room and batting cages and is nearing a summer ribbon-cutting.
Leagues and schools rely on the venues
The Community Sports League Central runs the Central Area Youth League, an affordable baseball program with a $30 fee for children ages 4-21 who have developmental or physical disabilities. Central Iowa Recreation League operates multi-community youth flag football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball that use local courts and fields. Campus Recreation at Central Connecticut State University runs free intramural leagues with three competitive tiers. Central City High School in Iowa hosted state-qualifying Class 1A track and field meets on its new all-weather eight-lane oval track, one of few such facilities in the Tri-Rivers Conference.
Central High School in Baton Rouge completed a $3 million athletic complex upgrade in 2024 that added a renovated weight room, new football locker rooms and a gaming space. Residents can locate current schedules and registration details for these programs through each league or school athletic department.
