Central Unveils Smart City Roadmap: AI, Sensors, Traffic Systems by 2028

Central's Office of Digital Infrastructure released its 2026 smart city roadmap on Monday, listing concrete products including an AI energy management platform and a network of 1,200 new traffic sensors.
The update arrives as Central's population has grown by 8 percent since 2023, pushing demand for systems that cut commute times and lower utility costs across the Downtown Core and adjacent districts.
Work will begin first in the Innovation District along 12th Avenue, where the Central Tech Hub already hosts pilot servers, and in the Riverwalk neighbourhood, home to the Nexus Innovations testing lab opened last year.
Products listed for 2027 rollout
The roadmap names an AI platform that adjusts building heating and cooling in real time, priced at an estimated $42 million for initial installation. It also calls for autonomous vehicle lanes on Maple Street between 5th and 9th Avenues, with construction bids due in September.
City data shows the existing 650 sensors cut average intersection delays by 11 percent during the 2025 pilot on 12th Avenue. Officials project the full 1,200-sensor grid will expand that figure to 19 percent once live in March 2027.
Next steps for residents and firms
Businesses along Riverwalk can apply for early integration grants starting August 1 through the Central Tech Alliance office. Residents will receive notices about sensor placement on their blocks by October.
