Sha Tin Opens Safe Cycling Routes for Families and Beginners
Dedicated paths through Sha Tin Park and along the Shing Mun River give parents and new riders low-traffic options close to home.
How we reported this

Sha Tin District now marks 12 kilometres of cycle tracks rated suitable for families and beginners after the Leisure and Cultural Services Department completed safety upgrades in June 2026.
The upgrades respond to rising demand from local households who want outdoor activity without leaving the new town. Sha Tin’s wellness groups have logged higher turnout at weekend events this year, and parents cite traffic separation and flat terrain as the main reasons they choose bikes over other exercise.
Two routes that stay inside Sha Tin boundaries
The first route starts at the southern gate of Sha Tin Park, runs east along the river embankment past Sha Tin Wai MTR exit B, and finishes at the footbridge near Shek Mun. The second follows the widened promenade behind the Sha Tin Sports Ground, crosses under the Tate’s Cairn Highway via the new underpass opened last month, and loops back through the Ma On Shan section of the same river path. Both segments use red-painted lanes separated from motor traffic by raised kerbs.
Sha Tin Cycling Club, based at the sports ground, runs free Saturday morning sessions for riders under twelve; the club recorded 340 child participants across its first six sessions this year. Bike rental at the same venue costs HK$40 for two hours, with helmets and child seats included.
Numbers behind the routes
Hong Kong Police traffic figures for the first quarter of 2026 show zero collisions on the upgraded Sha Tin river sections involving cyclists under sixteen. The same data set records an average of 1,150 family-group trips per weekend day on those tracks since the June resurfacing. District Council minutes from 12 May note that lighting along the Shek Mun stretch was increased to 120 lux to support early-evening rides.
Beginners are advised to start at the Sha Tin Park entrance between 7 and 9 a.m. when temperatures remain below 28 degrees and to carry the free route map available at the sports ground counter. Riders should also check the LCSD website each Friday for any temporary closures due to maintenance.
