Stanley's Two Waterfront Pools Draw Lap Swimmers This Early Summer
Early summer demand has pushed local lap swimmers toward fixed lanes at two established sites along the waterfront.
How we reported this
Stanley residents logged more than 1,200 lap sessions at the city’s two primary outdoor venues during the first week of July, according to attendance tallies released by the parks department on Wednesday.
The spike follows the launch of the Stanley Active Living Plan in late June, which added extended evening hours at both facilities and introduced a free shuttle from the Elm Street transit hub. City data shows average daily temperatures have held above 24 degrees Celsius since June 20, prompting more residents to seek water-based exercise rather than indoor gyms.
Two venues anchor the lap-swimming scene
The Harbour Rock Pool sits at the foot of Bay Street, where a natural granite formation was fitted with lane markers and a 50-metre straightaway in 2019. Swimmers report consistent 1.2-metre depth across the length, with entry steps on the north side that allow quick turns during repeat sets. A short walk east along the same shoreline leads to the Riverside Drive Municipal Pool, a 25-metre heated tank managed by the Stanley Parks and Recreation Division. Both sites open at 6 a.m. on weekdays and remain open until 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays under the new schedule.
Monthly membership at the municipal pool costs $42 for adults, while the rock pool charges a $6 day pass collected through a self-service kiosk at the Bay Street entrance. The parks department recorded 680 visits at the rock pool and 540 at Riverside Drive during the first seven days of July, with peak hours between 7 and 8 a.m. and again after 6 p.m.
Practical steps for swimmers this month
Those planning repeat visits can download the Stanley Parks app to reserve a lane slot up to 48 hours ahead; same-day spots remain available on a first-come basis. Lifeguards on duty at both locations remind users to yield to faster swimmers in the outside lanes and to exit the water promptly at closing. The next round of extended hours begins July 15, when the city will add Saturday morning sessions at the rock pool through the end of August.
