Exercise & Anxiety Relief in Stanley: Data Shows 18% Drop
Stanley's waterfront walking groups reduce anxiety by 18%. Free programs in the River District help residents manage stress through regular movement.
How we reported this
Stanley residents who walked or cycled three times a week reported 18 percent lower anxiety scores after eight weeks, according to intake forms collected by the city health office through June 2026.
City records show rising requests for stress-related support at clinics on Harbour Road since early spring, when longer daylight hours coincided with tighter work schedules for port and tourism staff. The pattern matches findings from other mid-sized ports where seasonal employment spikes leave little room for recovery time.
Two Stanley programs track the effect
The Stanley Recreation Trail, which runs from Victoria Avenue to the old ferry terminal, hosts a free 7 a.m. group walk on Tuesdays and Thursdays organised by the River District Wellness Collective. At the same time, the Stanley Community Centre on Maple Lane runs a paid indoor cycling class that caps at 25 riders and costs 45 dollars for a six-week block. Both efforts began collecting simple mood checklists in March and have kept the same 20-question form for every participant.
Forms submitted by 142 people show the average starting score of 14 on a 0-to-21 anxiety scale fell to 11.5 after the first month. The largest drops appeared among those who attended at least 10 of the 12 scheduled sessions. No other city program has released comparable before-and-after numbers this year.
Practical steps residents can take this month
Anyone can start with the free trail walks, which require only comfortable shoes and meet at the Victoria Avenue kiosk. Those who prefer paid classes can register at the Maple Lane desk before the next cycling block opens on 20 July. City staff advise checking with a doctor first if blood pressure or joint issues exist, then adding one extra 30-minute session each week rather than overhauling an entire routine at once. Updated checklists will be available again at the end of August.
