Safe Cycling Routes for Families and Beginners Open in Tsim Sha Tsui
Dedicated waterfront paths give new riders and parents with children low-traffic options close to home.

Tsim Sha Tsui launched two new family cycling loops on 1 July 2026 that connect the East Promenade with the section of Salisbury Road closed to cars on weekends.
Residents have pressed for protected bike lanes since the 2024 district council survey showed 62 percent of households with children under 12 wanted car-free routes within one kilometre of their homes. The summer school break that began last week has increased demand for outdoor activity that does not require travel outside the district.
Two named routes now ready for use
The first route starts at the Tsim Sha Tsui East Promenade near the Hong Kong Science Museum and runs 2.8 kilometres along the harbour edge to the Avenue of Stars before turning inland on a painted lane that ends at the entrance to Kowloon Park. The second route begins at the Star Ferry Pier and follows a 1.9-kilometre protected path on the southern side of Salisbury Road, linking directly with the existing track inside the park. Both routes are maintained by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and are closed to motor traffic between 8am and 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
LCSD figures released in May showed 4,800 people used the trial sections of these paths during the four weekends they were open in April. Adult bicycle hire at the kiosk beside the Science Museum costs HK$35 for the first hour and HK$20 for each additional hour, while child seats and helmets are provided free with every rental. The department also runs free 90-minute beginner classes every Saturday morning at 9am, limited to 25 participants and booked through the LCSD mobile app.
Practical steps before heading out
Families should arrive before 9am to avoid the midday heat and should carry at least one litre of water per rider. The LCSD website lists real-time lane closures and weather alerts, and the nearest first-aid station is inside Kowloon Park near the indoor games hall. Riders who complete either loop can return bikes at either the Science Museum or Star Ferry Pier kiosk without extra charge.
