Tung Chung Opens Safe Cycling Paths for Families and Beginners
Tung Chung parks now feature dedicated paths that keep new riders and children away from busy roads.
How we reported this
More Tung Chung residents began using the flat cycle tracks around Tung Chung Park and the adjacent waterfront this month after the district added new signage and barriers last week.
The change comes as families seek low-cost outdoor options during the school summer break that runs until mid-August. Parents report they want short outings that do not require driving to more distant parts of Lantau Island.
Two routes already in use
One loop starts at the Tung Chung Park entrance on Cheung Tung Road and runs 2.8 kilometres along the promenade past Yat Tung Estate before returning via a separate path beside the nullah. A second route begins at the North Lantau Community Centre car park and follows the marked lane beside Tung Chung Road for 1.6 kilometres to the edge of the North Lantau Country Park buffer zone. Both paths stay on dedicated cycle track or shared pedestrian-cycle pavement with speed limits of 10 kilometres per hour.
The Tung Chung District Council funded the recent upgrades, which include new bike stands at both locations and free helmets available for loan at the community centre on weekdays. Local group Lantau Cycle Friends has run free beginner sessions on Saturday mornings since April 2026.
Numbers behind the routes
Records from the council show 1,240 bicycle rentals recorded at the two sites in June 2026, up from 820 the same month last year. Standard hire costs HK$40 for two hours at the park kiosk. The tracks are lit until 9 pm, matching the extended daylight through July.
Users are advised to start at the community centre for a quick safety check and map, then ride the shorter waterfront loop first before attempting the slightly longer park route. Helmets remain compulsory for riders under 18, and the council asks all cyclists to keep to the left and give way to pedestrians at marked crossings.
