July marks peak season for several Lantau-grown items as daytime temperatures climb above 30 degrees. Residents seek fresher options to support energy levels during longer daylight hours and to reduce reliance on imported produce that travels through the airport cargo terminals.
The Tung Chung Waterfront Market near the MTR station opens every Saturday from 8am to 1pm, drawing vendors from Mui Wo and Tai O who set up under white tents along the promenade. A second regular spot operates on Wednesdays at Yat Tung Estate Plaza, where the Lantau Fresh Produce Programme supplies stalls with bok choy and water spinach harvested the same morning.
Department records show Hong Kong lychee output reached 1,150 tonnes in the 2025 season, with Tung Chung vendors reporting average sales of 40 kilograms per stall on peak July Saturdays. Prices for mangoes at the same markets sit at HK$32 per kilogram this week.
July produce to watch
Lychees from Lantau orchards remain the top draw through the end of the month. Shoppers also find bitter melon, long beans and fresh ginger at both the Waterfront and Yat Tung locations. Vendors advise buying early to secure the smaller, sweeter lychee clusters before afternoon heat sets in.
Buyers at Yat Tung Estate Plaza can check the Lantau Fresh Produce Programme label on crates for same-day harvest dates. The Tung Chung Waterfront Market offers a tasting table on the first Saturday of each month where staff slice samples of the current lychee batch.
