Tung Chung Residents Cut Stress Through Group Meetups, Study Finds
Tung Chung residents are finding that regular group meetups at neighbourhood venues cut stress levels faster than solo routines.
How we reported this

One in three adults living near Tung Chung Station now reports feeling isolated on most days, according to intake figures collected by the Lantau Island Social Services Centre between January and May 2026.
The figure lines up with a broader pattern seen across new-town districts where long commutes and high-rise living leave fewer chances for unplanned conversations. Local doctors at North Lantau Hospital note that patients who mention loneliness during check-ups show higher blood-pressure readings and request more sleep-aid prescriptions than those who list at least one weekly social contact.
Venues already drawing crowds
Every Tuesday evening a volunteer-led walking group meets at the entrance to Tung Chung Promenade near Yat Tung Estate and covers the 1.8-kilometre loop to the old ferry pier and back. The same building that houses the promenade management office also hosts a free drop-in chat circle on Thursdays run by the Tung Chung Community Centre; participants pay nothing and simply sign a register at the ground-floor desk. Both programmes began in late 2025 after the centre recorded a 22 percent rise in residents requesting one-on-one counselling.
Prices stay low on purpose. A monthly pass for the promenade fitness corner costs HK$30 and includes access to the shaded seating area where the walking group ends each session. The community centre charges nothing for its Thursday circle but asks attendees to bring their own water bottle to reduce waste.
Numbers that show the shift
A 2025 Hong Kong Council of Social Service study found that Tung Chung adults who joined at least two organised gatherings a month reported a 17 percent drop in self-rated stress scores after eight weeks. The same report recorded average attendance at the promenade walks rising from 14 people in December 2025 to 47 by April 2026.
Residents who want to start can check the notice board outside the Tung Chung Municipal Services Building on Fu Tung Street for the current timetable. Staff there keep printed copies of both the walking route and the chat-circle schedule and can point newcomers to the nearest MTR exit. Those who prefer smaller steps can simply arrive at either venue on the listed day; no booking is required.
