Tung Chung outdoor pools and rock pools perfect for lap swimming
Residents turn to open-air water spots along the waterfront for structured lap sessions as summer temperatures climb.
How we reported this
Tung Chung residents have increased visits to outdoor lap facilities by 22 percent since the start of June, according to Leisure and Cultural Services Department counters at local venues.
Summer heat and an established local wellness culture that favors early-morning exercise have pushed more people toward water-based training instead of indoor gyms. The shift aligns with longer daylight hours that allow consistent lap schedules before work or school runs along Tat Tung Road and Chung Yan Road.
Two accessible water sites
The 50-metre outdoor lap pool at Tung Chung North Park on Mei Tung Street opened its summer schedule on 1 June and operates daily from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Swimmers share lane space with a mix of fitness groups and families, with separate times reserved for lap-only use between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. A short walk away, the natural rock pools at Tung Chung East Promenade near the Pak Mong footpath provide a tidal alternative where locals mark out 25-metre stretches at low tide for repeat lengths.
Entry to the North Park pool costs HK$17 for adults on weekdays and HK$19 on weekends, with monthly concession passes available through the district leisure office. The rock pools remain free but require checking tide tables posted at the promenade notice board to avoid high-water periods that cover the flat rock ledges.
Practical steps for new users
Swimmers planning first visits should arrive before 7 a.m. to secure a lane at the North Park pool or check the tide app linked on the Tung Chung community notice board. Bring a towel and water bottle, as changing rooms at the park close for cleaning between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Those preferring the rock pools should wear reef shoes and start sessions at least two hours before high tide listed for 8 July.
