Cycling routes safe for families and beginners expand across Tung Chung parks

Tung Chung parks added 4.8 kilometres of marked family cycling lanes this month, with the routes running from the Tung Chung Promenade to the edges of Yat Tung Estate and linking directly to the flat paths beside North Lantau Hospital.

School holidays began on 1 July and daytime temperatures have held above 30 degrees, prompting more households to seek shaded, level routes close to home rather than travelling farther afield.

Marked paths connect two key neighbourhoods

The new blue-and-white lane starts at the eastern end of the Tung Chung Promenade, passes the public pier and runs west for 2.1 kilometres before turning inland along Cheung Tung Road toward Yat Tung Estate. A second 1.7-kilometre spur begins at the estate’s central playground and circles the sports ground before rejoining the waterfront track near the bus interchange.

Both sections stay under 3 percent gradient and are separated from motor traffic by concrete barriers installed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in late June. The Tung Chung Sports Association has placed rental kiosks at each end, stocked with 26-inch and 20-inch bikes fitted with child seats.

Usage data shows steady early demand

LCSD figures released on 8 July recorded 1,420 family rentals across the two kiosks in the first seven days, at HK$45 per hour for an adult bike and HK$25 for a child model. Peak hours run from 9 am to 11 am, before direct sun hits the open sections.

Users must show a valid Octopus card for deposit; helmets are included at no extra charge. The department plans to add 30 more bikes by 20 July if demand continues at the current rate.

Families can download the LCSD Tung Chung cycling map on their phones before setting out and should start at the Promenade kiosk, where staff provide a short safety briefing. The full loop takes roughly 45 minutes at an easy pace, with shaded rest areas at the 1-kilometre and 3-kilometre marks.
